What the office does

The sheriff is the county's chief peace officer. State law directs the sheriff to preserve the peace; arrest people who commit or attempt a public offense and bring them before a magistrate; prevent and suppress affrays, breaches of the peace, riots and insurrections; attend the courts when danger is anticipated; and take charge of the county jail and its prisoners. The sheriff also serves and returns legal process and notices, and conducts or coordinates search-and-rescue operations in the county.
