What the office does

State law places election administration on the Board of Supervisors, and Title 16 refers throughout to "the board of supervisors or other officer in charge of elections" without defining the director. The county describes the Elections Department as working under the board and county administration, alongside the Recorder's Office, to administer and coordinate all elections: receiving candidate nominations, challenges, initiatives, recalls and referendums; programming the election management system and ballot layout; recruiting, hiring and training election board workers; and tabulating ballots and calculating the unofficial results for the board's official canvass.
