What the office does

Oro Valley's council is seven members including the directly elected mayor, serving four-year overlapping terms. State law puts all of a town's corporate power in the council: it controls the town's finances and property, sets the duties and pay of town officers, and must meet in public. The code adds that every power is exercised only by ordinance, resolution, order or motion.

Each December the council elects one of its members vice mayor for a year; the vice mayor performs the mayor's duties when the mayor is absent and succeeds to the office if it becomes vacant. The council appoints the town manager, the town attorney and the police chief.
