What the office does
The director of a county health department is appointed by the Board of Supervisors and is the department's executive officer and the secretary of the county board of health. State law directs the director to report to the state health department when the health of persons is in danger or a contagious disease occurs; to enforce the rules of the state health and environmental-quality departments and the local board of health, county health regulations, and state public-health law; to hire the department's staff; and to deliver an annual report on the county's public health. The county code makes the director the "health officer" who enforces the county health code.
