What the office does

Oro Valley is a general-law town, so state law makes the mayor the town's chief executive officer and the town code fills in the job. The mayor chairs the council and presides over its meetings, with a full voice and vote, may make and second motions, enforces the town code, signs the documents the council or the law requires, and makes recommendations to the council.

The mayor may declare a local emergency by proclamation. If the mayor refuses to sign a document for five days, three council members can authorize the vice mayor to sign it.
