What the office does
The clerk is the town's record keeper: keeps a true and correct record of all business the council transacts, prepares the minutes of council proceedings, files and publishes ordinances and resolutions, and keeps the public records under the clerk's control available for public inspection. By state law the clerk is also the town treasurer, and the code makes the clerk the town election official and the issuer of town licenses. Legal notices and lawsuits against the town are served on the clerk.
The clerk is appointed, evaluated and terminated by the town manager.
