Who They Are: Tucson

Monica Prieto

Police Chief · Department directors, Tucson

How
Appointed
Since
February 2026
Background
Chief since Feb. 13, 2026, succeeding Chad Kasmar, who retired after more than 25 years and is now a Pima County deputy administrator.

What the office does

The chief has full control of the city's police force and must devote full time to the office, keeping a public office open day and night. The council sets the size of the force. The chief and the department's officers may make arrests for violations of city ordinances and have the same arrest and process-serving powers within the city as sheriffs and other state peace officers, plus whatever duties the council adds by ordinance.

The chief is appointed by the city manager with the council's consent and can be removed or demoted by the manager, with only an advisory civil-service appeal.
