What the office does
Each of Arizona's 30 legislative districts elects two representatives to two-year terms, and no representative may serve more than four consecutive terms in the seat.
Arizona's lawmaking power belongs to the Legislature, a Senate and a House of Representatives; the people keep the initiative and referendum for themselves. The Legislature meets every year at the Capitol starting the second Monday of January, and the governor can call special sessions limited to the subjects named in the call.
A bill passes only with a majority of all members elected to each house, then goes to the governor. A veto is overridden by two-thirds of the members elected to each house. Final passage of every bill takes a recorded roll-call vote.
