What the office does

The Senate is one of the two houses of Congress, which holds the nation's lawmaking power: a bill becomes law only after it passes both the House and the Senate and goes to the president. Each state elects two senators by popular vote to six-year terms, staggered so one seat comes up every two years.

The Senate has jobs the House does not. It alone tries impeachments. The president's treaties take effect only with the consent of two-thirds of the senators present, and the president's nominations of ambassadors, Supreme Court justices and other federal officers need the Senate's advice and consent.
