What the office does
The town attorney is the town's lawyer: legal counselor and advisor to the council and town officials, giving written opinions on request; drafter of deeds, contracts, ordinances, resolutions and other legal instruments; and the officer who approves the legal form of every contract in writing. The attorney supervises the prosecution and defense of every criminal and civil case in which the town is a party, and may settle small claims.
The attorney is appointed by and serves at the pleasure of the council, which evaluates the office each year. All legal advice to town officials comes through this office.
