Republican leaders defend voucher ballot measure that opponents say would block reform. Legislative Republican leaders deny that Proposition 145 was written to head off Proposition 212, a rival November measure to regulate Arizona's school voucher program, but say the measure would be constitutional even if it did, Arizona Mirror reported. Sun On Demand expands to Tucson's east side Aug. 16. The city said in a release that its free on-demand transit service will open its largest zone yet on Sunday, Aug. 16, covering the area from Tanque Verde Road to Golf Links Road and Wilmot Road to Houghton Road. The city said the new zone is roughly double the size of existing Sun On Demand zones; Sun Tran also flagged the launch in its August rider newsletter.
City plans shade structures at 80-plus bus stops. Tucson plans to install shelters at at least 80 bus stops using federal money and RTA Next funds, Tucson Spotlight reported, as riders describe long waits with no shade during summer heat. New wildfire burning in the Santa Catalinas after lightning. A fire started Friday night in the Catalina Foothills and was burning near the Finger Rock Trail, with flames visible from parts of the Tucson area, according to KOLD, KGUN 9 and KVOA. Broadcasters reported the fire was likely sparked by a lightning strike; size and containment figures were not available as of late Friday.
Man arrested in Germany in death of 19-year-old woman in midtown Tucson. Tucson police say Varun Batchigari, 20, is charged with first-degree murder and kidnapping after his girlfriend was found dead in a midtown apartment Thursday. Police say he flew to Germany the same day the body was discovered and was arrested on arrival.

Downtown mass shooting suspect pleads not guilty, held without bond. David Leroy French, 21, appeared in Pima County court Friday on 29 charges tied to the downtown Tucson mass shooting that injured nine people, entering a not guilty plea at his arraignment. He is being held without bond ahead of an Aug. 11 bond hearing, according to reports on the hearing.

Two co-defendants sentenced in Good Samaritan killing. Elmer Smith was sentenced Friday to more than seven years in prison and Wendy Scott received probation for their roles in the death of Paul Clifford, after both reached plea deals and testified against a third defendant, Jack Upchurch. Pima County Attorney Laura Conover issued a statement after the hearings; KGUN 9 reported the victim's family objected to the outcome.

Marana Unified says state grant will expand school safety officers to 10 schools. The district announced it was awarded $2.4 million from the Arizona Department of Education to expand its School Safety Officer program, which places off-duty police officers on campuses. Marana said the expansion will cover the majority of schools across the district.

Del Lago Golf Club in Vail to close after 26 years. The Vail course will shut down, becoming the latest Tucson-area golf course to close amid financial and water pressures, according to columnist Greg Hansen's notebook in the Arizona Daily Star. A closing date was not specified in the report.
Oro Valley moves ahead on new police headquarters. Deputy Chief Curtiss Hicks told Inside Tucson Business the department has needed a new headquarters "for two decades now," and said the completed building should also serve as a recruiting tool. The publication reported the project addresses longstanding space needs at the department.
