Five detained in early-morning raid on Tucson's north side. Arizona Luminaria reported that federal agents arrived in a large armored vehicle around 6 a.m. Thursday in a north-side neighborhood, with guns drawn, and arrested several men. According to the outlet, five people were detained and officials had provided few answers about the operation as of Thursday.
Rescues at Sabino Canyon as flash flooding hit east side. A 20-year-old cyclist was hospitalized Thursday morning after being pulled into rushing water while trying to ride across a flooded bridge at Sabino Canyon, the Arizona Daily Star reported. KOLD reported bystanders also struggled to pull a family from rushing water at the canyon, with two patients taken to a hospital in stable condition; the National Weather Service had a flash flood warning in effect for east-central Pima County until 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Deputies seek man who approached Altar Valley Middle School. The Pima County Sheriff's Department is asking for help identifying an elderly man who came to the middle school Wednesday afternoon and offered a student $50 to help set up a computer at his home, according to KGUN 9, KVOA and KOLD. Investigators have released a description and are asking anyone who recognizes the man to contact the department.

Pima County to draft a data center moratorium. County staff will develop a moratorium on data center development, AZPM reported. Separately, KVOA reported that Arizona utility regulators are moving to keep residential customers from absorbing the power costs of large users such as data centers.
Supervisors and City Council advance shared poverty plan. The Pima County Board of Supervisors and the Tucson City Council met jointly Thursday to advance the Prosperity Initiative, a shared anti-poverty framework, and warned about the local fallout of federal funding cuts.
ACLU drops challenge to Arizona's border enforcement law. The American Civil Liberties Union has dropped, at least for now, its bid to block enforcement of the state law that allows state and local police to arrest some people who cross the border outside official ports of entry, the Arizona Daily Star and Arizona Mirror reported. The measure, Proposition 314, passed with 61% of the vote two years ago.

Sun Tran route changes begin Sunday; streetcar 105 returns Tuesday. The City of Tucson said in a release that Sun Tran, Sun Express and Sun Shuttle route and service changes take effect Aug. 16, including Route 8 merging with Route 108X and extending to Houghton Road at 15-minute frequency, and Route 9 extending to Pima Community College East. The city also announced that Sun Link streetcar 105, the "Comeback Car," is scheduled to return to service Aug. 18, with a media preview that morning at the operations facility at 290 E. 8th St.

Shelter-in-place lifted at two Vail schools. The Pima County Sheriff's Department said the incident began when an armed juvenile was spotted near the schools, and the shelter-in-place was later lifted, according to KOLD.
Second jobs keep some Tucson teachers in classrooms. Arizona Luminaria reported on Tucson-area teachers working additional jobs to stay in the profession, following an east-side elementary P.E. teacher through a day that begins before 7:20 a.m. and continues after the school day ends.

Pascua Yaqui's third casino to open Nov. 15. The Pascua Yaqui Tribe's newest casino, on Tucson's west side, is set to open Nov. 15, the Arizona Daily Star reported in a preview of the property.
I-10 widening project reaches halfway point. The Arizona Department of Transportation has hit the midpoint of its $600 million reconstruction and widening of Interstate 10 between Kino Parkway and Alvernon Way southeast of downtown, with major changes expected ahead, according to KVOA.
Fourth Avenue merchants petition over new parking meter hours. Businesses along Fourth Avenue have launched a petition pushing back on the city's new parking meter hours, and it had gathered nearly 1,000 signatures as of Thursday afternoon, KOLD reported.

⚠️ Extreme Heat Watch — not yet in effect. The National Weather Service in Tucson issued an Extreme Heat Watch for the Tucson metro area, western Pima County, the Tohono O'odham Nation and parts of Pinal County that begins Monday morning, Aug. 17, and runs through Wednesday evening, Aug. 19. Forecasters warn of temperatures up to 105 to 108 with Major to Extreme HeatRisk, noting heat-related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat events.
Today: mostly sunny, high near 98, with south-southwest wind of 1 to 5 mph. Tonight: partly cloudy, low around 75. Saturday: sunny, high near 102, with heat index values as high as 101 and a low near 77 Saturday night.
Rain chances are shutting down as high pressure builds back in, and temperatures climb through the weekend. Sunday is forecast to reach 104, with Monday near 106 ahead of a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after 5 p.m. Overnight lows near 80 by Sunday night will offer little relief.
