What the office does

The chief of police enforces the town code and state statutes by arresting and charging violators within the town's jurisdiction, investigates or directs the investigation of crimes, directs traffic and investigates accidents, inspects traffic-control devices and reports defects to the town engineer, adopts the department's rules, supervises and controls the department's officers and personnel, hires officers within the approved budget, and reports on the department's duties and receipts when the council asks.

The chief is appointed by the town manager and is also the town's statutory marshal, except for tax collection, which the code assigns to the finance director.
