What the office does

Marana is a general-law town, so state law makes the mayor the town's chief executive officer and the town code fills in the job. The mayor chairs the council and presides over its meetings, with a full voice and vote, may make and second motions, signs the documents the council or the law requires, and makes recommendations to the council.

The mayor may declare a local emergency by proclamation, though the code specifically withholds the power to order businesses closed. If the mayor refuses to sign a document for five days, a council majority can authorize the vice mayor to sign it.
