What the office does
Marana's council is the directly elected mayor plus six council members, all serving four-year overlapping terms. State law puts all of a town's corporate power in the council: it controls the town's finances and property, sets the duties and pay of town officers, and must meet in public. The code adds that every power is exercised only by ordinance, resolution, order or motion.
The council appoints the town manager at will by majority vote; the manager in turn appoints the town attorney and the police chief. Council vacancies are filled by appointment after the clerk advertises the seat.
