What the office does
The council chooses a vice mayor from among its members by majority vote, no later than Dec. 31 after each general election, for a term of up to two years unless reappointed. The vice mayor assumes the mayor's duties whenever the mayor is absent, disqualified or resigns; if both are absent, the council may name an acting mayor. Removing a vice mayor early takes at least four council votes.
The vice mayor is otherwise a council member, with the same vote as the rest.
